Seasonal Reasoning
“For every season, there is a reason.” I remember this phrase from my childhood. It could be lyrics from a song my mother used to sing, I honestly don’t know the origin, but it always seemed very fitting.
For me, “winter” is the planning and learning season. In January, I took a snow shoeing class, but I spent most of this season’s cold, rainy evenings studying garden catalogs and poultry management books. I hauled armloads of books home from the library with the intensity of a college freshman who suddenly realized finals were next week. Through January and February, I spent hours taking notes, sketching ideas, dog-earing magazine pages, surfing the Internet, and photocopying resources for my files. I am now ready for spring!
The Winter/Spring issue of Outdoor Woman Magazine offers many reasons to enjoy the winter season, most with an eye toward spring. This is a great time of year to challenge yourself to a new adventure, like Michelle Scheuermann, from The Sportsman Channel in “First Pheasant” (pg. 8), or take J.J Reich’s lead and learn more about Geocaching (pg. 50), then start planning spring excursions for yourself or with family and friends. If you live in an area with sufficient ice, try Ice Fishing at the suggestion of Sue Hansen in “Ice Fishing Alaska’s Interior”, (pg. 18). Now is also the perfect time to start a new puppy, according to Oklahoma dog trainer and outdoor writer, Beth Ann Amico. Read her advice on choosing the right puppy in “Duck Pups–Choosing the Perfect Retriever” (pg. 40). After you’ve read Dave Rasmussen’s clam digging article (pg. 32), you’ll be ready to grab your “gun” and head for the beach. Anyone considering buying a boat or wanting to learn more about safe boating will find valuable information in “Ready, Set, Boat! Part I” by Angie Fisher (pg. 28)—just in time for the spring boating season. If you’re in need of a little inspiration to shake off the winter gloomies, meet Outdoor Professional, Pudge Kleinkauf (pg. 42). Her challenges and triumphs strike a poignant chord and remind us all that there is no time to waste because “Someday is right now”.
In a few weeks, it will be time to implement the plans that have grown fertile in my mind. I can picture each project with tangible clarity. Sometimes my plans turn out exactly the way I envision. Sometimes they don’t, but that’s OK. I can hardly wait to see how this year’s projects develop!
Winter doesn’t have to be “couch potato” season. It’s the perfect season to intellectually prepare yourself for new adventures or get in shape so you’re ready to pursue old favorites when the weather breaks. There are so many activities to discover and enjoy—don’t miss a minute of it!
Enjoy the season!
